Control of cats

Sir, — I thank Mr G. R. Williams for his reply to my letter (“The Press,” August 26). 1 agree our predecessors should not have liberated cats on Little Barrier Island, but two wrongs do not make one right. During a recent outbreak of feline enteritis I was assured by a vet that this disease only attacks young cats and kittens. This means on Little Barrier Island the young cats will be killed leaving older cats still to attack the birds. Assuming some of these cats will live more than five years, this means the species of petrel which will be extinct in five years is still in as much peril as ever. If birds pick up seeds which are contaminated and deposit them on the mainland, surely this would be a means of spreading feline enteritis, the germs of which live for as long as six months. — Yours, etc., S. BROOKS. August 27, 1977.
