Swiss protest
NZPA-Reuter Berne Some 10,000 demonstrators demanding a four-year ban on construction of new nuclear power stations in Switzerland marched through Berne on Saturday. More than 200 police lined the route. There were no clashes or incidents.
Earlier this year police used tear gas and rubber bullets to stop protesters occupying an atomic power plant site at Goesgen in i northern Switzerland. Switzerland has three atomic power plants in operation, and Government ex--1 perts have estimated that at I least 10 more are needed to ensure adequate electricity supplies up to the end of this century.
The Government earlier this week decided not to authorise construction of any more atomic power stations until after a national referendum next year on a proposal that would give Parliament power to decide on building nuclear plants and provide for prior consultation with people living in surrounding areas.
