Big crowd at pony event
The first tnter-Pscifie pony club “scrambled” teams’ «<ent t« be held in the South Island attracted a record number of spectators to Riecarton Racecourse at the week-end Enjoying the warm weather, the large crowd moved round the cross country course, watching with interest the varying etylu of the voung riders from Australia, Canada. Great Britain. Japan. Singapore. Hong Kong and New Zealand. The winning team, howliai, set a very high standard with all team members having cleat cross country and show jumping rounds The team finiahed with 248.5 penalties, thia being IU best four dressage scores. The te»m members were Mohamed Mon (Far East) on Double Crown, Atuko Koizumi (Japan) on Neptune. Yolanda Egerton (Great Britain) on Karo. Angeia Bold (New Zealand) on Bronze Sparkle. Roger Nelson (Australia) on K.C., and Susan Sculthorpe (Canada) on Shilo. Kowhai was in fourth position after the dressage with only three penalties separating the first four teams. Tile Manuka team moved up from third to take second place with 277.5 penalties followed bv Kauri with 314, Rimu 341.75, Matai 390.50 and Totara 421 25. The national teams’ parade after the show jumping was followed bv the presentation of the Kangaroo Cup to the winning team, all riders reassembled into their “scrambled” teams. The outstanding feature of the dav was the sportsmanship and friendship displayed by the voung riders from the different countries making spectators apnreciate the importance of the Continuation of these Pacific ponv club exchanges. The next host win be Western Australia.
