Black shot

i NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg A black youth was shot dead by the police during a clash in Soweto on Thursday, South African television has reported. The killing occurred when warning shots were fired by police at Soweto’s Jabulani High School where some students had torn up their books and were trying to prevent others getting into class. The shooting was the first in about two weeks in the! one-million strong township, I where the Government announced on Thursday that it had cancelled the registration of 40 schools.

The Bantu (black) Education Minister (Mr Michael Botha) said the schools would now be registered as Government schools and that they would no longer be community schools. “The school boards, as representatives of the community have lost complete control over the pupils with the result that the pupils’ behaviour has become absolutely riotous,” Mr Botha said. For nearly five weeks now there has been an almost total boycott of schools in Soweto and sporadic clashes with police after the arrest of some student leaders
