Vandalism at Templeton

Vandals have struck again at the Templeton Domain. In the latest of a. long series of attacks, vandals have broken the plate-glass door of the domain clubhouse. A Paparua county councillor said this week that siting the clubhouse (pictured above) at the back of the park, well away from public view was one of the council’s most expensive mistakes.

Cr A. Y. Shuker, at a meeting of the council’s reserves and domains committee on Thursday evening. said that through no fault of council staff, the clubhouse, toilets, and grounds were in a shocking condition. The plate-glass door was broken during the weekend of August 6 and 7, and beer and whisky bottles broken and thrown about. Cr Shuker said he was very

disturbed a.bout such activities, and urged the council to erect all pavilions close to the road in future. “This domain has been a source of continual worry and expense to us,” he said. “We should have positive means of closing it and put up steel doors with bolts. They will save us money in the long run.” Cr Shuker said last evening that he did not know who was responsible for the vandalism.

Some new spray-pejnted slogans have been added to the walls of the clubhouse recently, Cr Shuker said this indicated that the attacks were not being committed by children. Although a new plateglass has been installed, a photographer of “The Press” who visited the site yesterday said the area w?.s still “in a mess.” Inside the clubhouse he found an armchair ripped up, and cupboards smashed in.
