Call for ‘fair deal’ on bargaining
PA Wellington. The Dominion president of Federated Farmers, Mr A. F. Wright, has called for “a fair deal but no more” on the nation’s return to free wage bargaining. In a statement, Mr Wright said: “Agriculture is on the verge of an increase in production following a significant increase in farm investment last season. It is vitally important that this new momentum is not jeopardised but is continued, to the benefit of all New Zealanders. “Wage and salary earners should receive a fair deal in the new wagefixing atmosphere, but we urge all parties involved to take great care not to attempt to go beyond that.
If any party attempts either to seize or to give more than what is a fair deal in today’s still-trea-cherous economic conditions, they put seriously at risk even their own prospects for improvement. “Along, with the new freedom of wage-bargain-ing went a solemn responsibility to adopt a reasonable attitude to wage increases, Mr Wright said. . New Zealanders must work together to keep exports competitive in world markets. “Only if we do that do we have a basis on which we can hope to build a recovery and new growth. ■: “If the balance is allowed to tip the other way we all face a setback that could be quite disastrous,” said Mr Wright.
