Bid to snuff 50-year fire
Westport reporter A 550,000 project has been launched to put out the Millerton coal fire, which has been burning for 50 years. The Mines Department has approved the finance for the Ministry of Works project—the first serious attempt to put out the blaze which started in the 19205. The job is expected to take three months. The Mines Department has hopes of open-cast mining at Millerton again, tapping more than 10M tonnes of coal reserves.
