Farmer hit dog with hammer
PA Hamilton A Morrinsville farm worker has been ordered to pay a fine of $75 to the Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, after he admitted a charge of aggravated cruelty to a dog, in the Magistrate’s Court at Morrinsville. The Court was told that Stephen McGregor Drake hit his dog several times over the head with an electric fence standard, and then, thinking it was dead, dumped it on a pile of meat carcases. The next day he was told the dog was still alive, so he struck it over the head five or six times with a hammer until it died. Drake said he had hit the dog with the standard because he was annoyed with it. He had not wanted <o inflict suffering on it — only to destroy it.
Mr J. E. Millar, S.M., said he accepted Drake had not set out to inflict pain on the animal, but he had been careless in the way in which he had killed it.
