Triple successes by two players In me under 15 section ana notable achievements by visitors in the under 17 division were me highlights 01 the final day of the Anderson and Hill junior tennis tournament at Wuuing Park yesterday.

The three-title champions were Alistair Chapman anu Jill Hibbert, who hau earlier won Hie under 15 mixed doubles. Yesterday, Chapman took the boys doubles with Deane Me. Kinnel and beat his partner in the singles final. There were similar developments in the girls' matches. Miss Hibbert beat Jane Clarke in the singles final and learned with her for the doubles victory. Christine Taylor, the Ashburton girl who proved to be the chief giant-killer of the tournament, won the under 17 girls’ singles final after dropping the first set to Stephanie O Flaherty. Later, Miss Taylor joined forces with Carolyn Feary to win the doubles title as well. Miss teary. an Oxford girl taking part in her first tournament at Wilding Park, won the girls’ plate. Seven Otago players, including Ashley Duncan and Kevin Galllvan from the Otago B side, have been named in the trial teams for the South Island under 16 side at Carisbrook today. The trialists were announced yesterday at the completion of the fourth day’s play in the rugby tournament being held at Hancock Park.

The trial will be played prior to the tournament final between Canterbury, last year’s winner, and Southland. No players from these two teams have been included.

A feature of the trial is the Inclusion of the two Otago full, backs, Alan Burt (Otago Blue) and Kevin Galiivan, and their personal dual should provide one of the game’s highlights. For the third year in succession. the Ashburton primary schoolgirls’ hockey team has shared the New Zealand title.

In the final of the week-long tournament at Whakatane yesterday, Ashburton fought out a tense and scrappy nil-all draw with Malvern, which had earlier defeated Ashburton’s 1975 and 1976 co-champions, Eastern Southland, 2-1, in a pool play-off. In Nelson, the touring Queensland schoolboy hockey team scored its fourth successive win when it beat Nelson, 10-0. Queensland led 4-0 at half-time, with goals by Murray Fitzpatrick (two), Greg Forbes, and David Morgan. Nelson forced the pace for the early part of the second half but the Queensland defence held. Towards the middle of the spell. Queensland again regained the initiative and scored a further six goals. Four of these came from the powerful inside left, Tony Meller.
