Town favourite for golf
Country gave its best performance for four years against Town in its annual
golf match last year when it held Town to a 18|-13i margin. In the previous three
years, Country had been unable to muster double figures. The odds once again are heavily stacked against Country in the event at Coringa tomorrow and it will be a creditable effort if the out-of-town clubs can finish as close as they did last year. Des Turner’s re-appearance in the town team after a lengthy spell overseas will be watched with interest. He will play at six. Ahead of him are four Freyberg Rose Bowl players and the Canterbury stroke champion, James Angus. Toby Richards, who beat both Angus and Wayne (Tucker last year, will fill the top position for Country and his powerful play should be suited to the long Coringa
course. Richards has played several excellent below-par rounds on the course. Geoff Saunders, the Town No. 1 and Angus will be Richards’ opponents. The second player for Country is the former Canterbury under--21 champion, lan Carruthers. John Allin and Mike Small, who both had good records for Rangiora in this year’s Woodward Cup club competition, will give Country strength at three and four. Their opponents will be two members of this year’s Freyberg side, Simon Robinson and Stephen Street. Country has a capable ( team but the considerable ; depth from the top to the (sixteenth place in the Town team should ensure it another I convincing victory.
