Safer racing with wall

Stock-car fans will be able to see safer racing at Woodford Glen Speedway this season, with the revolutionary instalation of a I new guard-wall. About 150 metres of the wooden fence on one of the circuit’s tightest bends, is being replaced [ using a new concretespraying technique. It is believed to be the first [ time the process has been

used for such a purpose. Concrete is sprayed under high pressure on to a reinforced-steel frame to form a guard-wall about a metre high, ranging from 300 cm thick at the base to 150 cm at the top. Costing about $3OOO, the work is expected to prevent cars which slide out of control from getting entangled in the wreckage of the fence. According to a

speed w a y spokesman, hoxvever, there is no fear of cars ricocheting back into the path of speeding vehicles. The corner is also being widened by up to 5.5 metres and this should help cut doxvn on inci ents there. The speedway season begins this year with an afternoon meeting on September 18.
