Late-Victorian edifice falls
Clay pipes and square gin ; bottles, smelling salts and horse-shoe nails — they all | came to light when the old Seamen’s Union building in 'Lyttelton came down. The origins of the build- ! ing, never what one could call one of the port’s more i inspired pieces of colonial !architecture, are shrouded in ;a good deal of obscurity. All that remains now is a ! crater which would have 'done a 20-pounder proud, i Just when the corrugated- ! iron, Steinbeckian structure !of Union Company green 'first materialised at the foot of Canterbury Street no-one is prepared to guess, though ’ most agree it had a distinctive air of late Victorian ! decadence about the mouldings round the outhouse i door. In its early days it housed i a bootmakers’ shop — in the days when the foot of Canterbury Street was the hub of a bustling commercial area. The bootmaker is believed to have been followed by R. D. Marshall’s furniture shop, and then, as businesses began abandoning Norwich Quay to the pubs, and headed for the higher ground on London Street, the Seamen’s Union moved I in.
