Financing TV
Sir, — Broadcasting finance is likely to remain a difficult problem under present arrangements so why not attempt a new approach to the problem? Overseas, a satisfactory solution has been reached by having the two stations, one ru by private enterprise with a monopoly of the “commercials,” the other financed by viewers’ licence fees plus payment by the “commercial” station for the use of facilities and equipment. New Zealand viewers would thereby have the pleasure of one station free from “commercials,” and, perhaps an improvement in quality programmes from the “commercial station.” Broadcasting staff should not have to fear redundancy as they could be taken over by the private station. It is true that they may not then enjoy the “autonomy” that they, at present, are so privileged to retain. — Yours, etc., R. V. SHAW. August 24, 1977.
