Carlaw Park facelift

The Auckland Rugby League has launched a major fund-raising project in a bid to upgrade and improve the playing surface of New Zealand’s most used and most maligned test venue, Carlaw Park. Situated in a hollow and with its level below that of the Auckland harbour only a kilometre or so away, Carlaw Park has been frequently criticised for its muddy condition in mid-winter. Its worst spell invariably coincides with tours to this country. An engineers’ report commissioned by the Auckland league confidently forecast that it was possible to provide a true surface “under all but the very worst of circumstances.” However, considerable expense is involved and the league had offered for sale 300 10-year season tickets at $3OO each to individuals and organisations. To reduce disruption to matches at Carlaw Park, it is expected that the improvements will begin in October. If more than 300 season tickets are sold, consideration will be given to modernising other facilities at the park.
