Action on Avon pollution
Officers of the Christchurch City Council's health department and the Christchurch Drainage Board are trying to stop practices which could add to bacterial contamination of the Avon River Sampling of contamination has not been finished because of recent rain but there is now
on half of the localities which previously showed high bacteria counts. Some sources of the contamination are the washing down of vehicles and their parking areas, the washing of yards near food premises. and waste-water discharges into stormwater drains instead of sewers. 1 The source of some I
contamination in sumps has yet to be determined. When the survey is completed, possible further action against bad practices leading to the problem will be considered by the council and drainage authorities, the City Council’s health and general committee has sai/i.
