Insurance up for surgery

PA Auckland. New Zealand’s biggest medical insurance group, Southern Cross, has put up its payments to members for surgery and for doctors’ fees. Its premiums will stay at present rates. The maximum payment for surgery will go from SlO9O to $1300; surgical fees will go from $430 to $504; and general practitioner visits up to $5 will now be covered.

The society which pays about 80 per cent costs, last/ increased payouts 16 months ago. Reviews are usually annual, but there was a delay because of the general freeze on professional fees.

Private-hospital fees were not subject to the freeze, and have continued to rise over the last year. Examples of costs of surgery have been given as $7OO for a hysterectomy, $6OO for varicose veins, and $l6O for typical surgery on a child’s tonsils.
