Recycling rubbish
Sir, —lt appears well nigh impossible to convince the powers that be in Christchurch that recycling of rubbish can make refuse disposal a profitable exercise, rather than a necessary evil. Two examples were shown on television recently. One project (Wellington city) was illustrated by film of truck loads of potentially recoverable material being hauled up into beautiful hilly country where it was dumped and then covered over with spoil bulldozed from the hillsides leaving huge scars on the landscape where the unstable ground thus formed will not, as hoped, return to its former beauty. The other side of the coin was shown by Auckland’s Mayor who explained how that city is conserving resources by means of rubbish sorted at its source (the household) and completely recycled by various means. — Yours, etc., L. E. REID. August 15, 1977.
