Simon Owen loses
NZPA London England's captain, Tony Jacklin, gave his team a good start against Australasia In the Double Diamond world golf team classic at Gleneagles last night (N.Z. time) when he beat the New Zealander, Simon Owen, 5 and 4. Jacklin. confident that England will win the title for a fifth time in seven years, went off to a flying start with a birdie three and was two-up at the turn. lie increased his lead to three at the eleventh, then took the thirteenth and completed the kill when he halved the fourteenth. England and Australasia are in group one of the classic, along with the rest of the world and Ireland. The United States, the favourite, is in group two. with Scotland, Wales and Europe.
■ The two Australians, Greg Norman and lan Stanley, tare 1 better than their New ZealanJ team-mate. Greg Norman beat Tommy Her ton by one hole alter being three up at the turn. lan Stanley was four-up after nine holes in his match again t Nick Faldo. Faldo managed to take only one hole, the tenth, and the remaining holes were halved to give Stanley a three and two victory. The other New Zealander. Bob Charles, wrapped up the coo test for Australasia when lie beat Neil Coles by two lioles. He went out in a dazzling four under 31 to lead Coles by four at the turn. Coles notched up a hat-trick of wins from the tenth, but at the eighteenth he went through the green with his third stroke to lose the hole and the match
