Nyerere to see Carter

NZPA-Reuter Washington

The Tanzanian leader (President Julius Nyerere) will arrive in Washington today for talks with President Carter on the key issues facing southern Africa.

The Tanzanian leader is the first black head of State to visit Washington for talks with the Carter Administration and the first black leader from southern Africa to visit the United States since Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda visited in April, 1975. American officials said the talks between the two Presidents would centre on the three problem issues of southern Africa — Rhodesia, Namibia (South-West Africa), and South Africa’s apartheid policy of racial segregation. President Nyerere will hold two official rounds of talks with Mr Carter today and tomorrow.

Like all other foreign leaders to call at the White House since Mr Carter came into office last January, he can also expect to be invited for a private discussion in the President’s residential quarters after a State dinner in his honour tonight.
