Amco league
Four of the highly professional Sydney clubs have, not surprisingly, reached the semi-finals of the $250,000 Amco Cup rugby league tournament.
Canterbury-Bankstown, which has the former Canterbury and Kiwi prop. Bill Noonan, in its pack, will meet Western Suburbs in one of the play-offs for the grand final, and the other will be between Eastern Suburbs and Penrith. Penrith had a 17-10 over the New South Wales country side which eliminated Auckland, Western Division, in one of the quarter-finals. The other results were: Canterbury-Bankstown 33, Monaro (N.S.W.) 10; Western Suburbs 27, St George (Sydney) 7; Eastern Suburbs 35, Valleys (Brisbane) 2.
Motor sport.—A large police operation will be mounted at Silverstone next week to prevent a repeat of the riots which have ruined the last two British Grand Prix international motorcycle meetings. Gangs of hooligans on motor-cycles clashed with racing enthusiasts and police last year and also in 1975, during the traditional August meeting, the major event on the British motor-cycle sport calendar. A crowd of 80,000 is expected this year. Tennis.—ln the first round of the men’s singles at the $75,650 claycourt tennis open in New Jersey, Onny Parun of New Zealand defeated Dick Crealy of Australia, 6-4, 64. Badminton.—The International Badminton Federation has accepted a British High Court ruling that the expulsion of Taiwan earlier this year was invalid. The decision, taken by the council in Glasgow, means Taiwan remains a member of the federation.
Golf.—Debbie Austin fired a sparkling four-under-par 69 that included three amazing putts to score a one-shot victory in the 5U575.000 Pocono Northeast women’s golf classic, tn Pennsylvania. Marilyn Smith (N.Z.) scored 78, 72, 82—232.
