Taranaki farmers fear blast

PA New Plymouth Taranaki farmers fear another explosion like that which ruptured the Kapuni pipeline at Pukearuhe a month ago.

The Taranaki Council of Federated Farmers heard in Stratford that the Kapuni pipeline in the Pukearuhe area may have an inherent weakness. Mr R. Maxwell (Urenui) said that this had yet to be proved, but it appeared the pipeline could be weak.

He said that there had been other gas leaks before the explosion. He believed that officials were beginning to compare sections of pipe where the leaks occurred with the section w’here the explosion took place.

"If there is a weak section there, we can expect further leaks and perhaps another blow-up,” he said. The meeting considered several Urenui remits asking for greater control of the pipeline and protection for farmers.
