Many U.K. teachers apply

PA Wellington Seven hundred British secondary school teachers have applied to come to New Zealand. This response came after only five days of advertising in the United Kingdom, the Minister of Education (Mr Gandar) said. The Education Department started the recruitment campaign because of a shortage of 300 secondary school teachers in New Zealand. A department official and a school principal will soon go to Britain to process the applications.

The Cabinet had so far given approval for 25 teachers to come as assisted migrants, and this might be increased, Mr Gandar said. Mr W. L. Renwick, the Director-General of Education, said that as well as the 25 assisted migrants another 70 teachers might be allowed to migrate at their own ex- | pense.
