Two union bans in Chch

Two black bans by trade unions are still in force in Christchurch.

One was imposed last week by the Canterbury branch of the Engineers’ Union on all new and capital works normally performed by electricians and fitters employed by the North Canterbury Hospital Board.

The union’s secretary (Mr R. J. Todd) said yesterday that the ban was still on, and would stay in force until a firm date was set for the talks on award claims. The chief executive of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Mr J. G. Laurenson) said that the ban was holding up the completion of much important hospital development.

Thousands of dollars worth of equipment was waiting to be installed.

The other ban is by the Canterbury Trades Council, and was imposed on movements to and from Clark Joinery, Ltd, of Sydenham, at the request of the Canterbury Carpenters' Union.

The union’s secretary (Mr J. Clough) said yesterday that the ban would continue until the union got some satisfaction from talks with the proprietor, Mr N. Clark, for a redundancy agreement for the six carpenters who have been given notices of dismissal.
