Possible sale of The Minstrel
NZPA London The French horse Exceller, which could start in the Melbourne Cup in November, may get another crack at Europe’s top three-year-old. The Minstrel, at York next month.
ExceUer, which found the Robert Sangster-owned and Irish trained colt too strong in last Saturday s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot, is one of 42 first acceptances for the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup (2100 m at York on August 16. The Francois Mathet-trained Exceller was running on boldly at the end of the 2400 m race although only third, a length and a half behind The Minstrel.
However, Mr Sangster said he had doubts about running The Minstrel in the immediate future. “He has had a lot of hard racing lately and I’m very tempted to sell him to American interests as they keep on increasing their offers,” he said.
Other earlv acceptances for York are the English Derby runner-up. Hot Grove. French St Leger winner Crow, Eclipse Stakes winner Artaius and Monseigneur. which finished fourth to The Minstrel in the English Derby last month.
