‘English as she is spoke’

Sir, —I wonder if Constance J. Gilbert has also heard the other annoying distortion of “eletric” for “electric,” from many people? Also “siccess” for “success,” “rezourse” for “resource,” “ecconomy” for “economy,” “Janarary” for “January,” and many more? — Yours, etc., LEICESTER S. EMMETT. July 30, 1977. Sir, —At last someone has spoken up about the neglect of the English language and its abuse. My pet hates are: “Pretty” — used indiscriminately, as in “pretty good,” “pretty bad” and so on; “awfully” as in “awfully kind”; “all of a sudden” instead of suddenly; “afraid” which is commonly used instead of sorry—“l’m afraid I cannot help”. “I’m afraid it’s not in stock” and so forth. More attention to the correct use of these words would make my life more enjoyable.—Yours, etc., (Mrs) I. I. COOMBE. July 29, 1977.
