Conservation Week opened
Conservation Week was opened in Christchurch with an address by Dr W. J. Ballantine, director of New Zealand’s first marine reserve at Leigh, Auckland.
The Leigh reserve, near Warkworth, incorporates the University of Auckland’s marine laboratory and various types of marine research are carried out there.
Surveying has been going on at Leigh for two years but it was not set aside as a protected marine area until six months ago.
