N.Z. rugby crowd 'oafs’
PA Nelson Crowd behaviour during the present Lions’ tour had been as boorish as he had known anywhere in the world, according to the Wellington journalist, Alex Veysey. “Knowing the sort of material which is being filed back to Britain by press men on the tour, I cringe for the name New Zealand is giving itself,” he said in a speech at the Nelson Sportsman of the Year function.
Mr Veysey, guest speaker at the function, said New Zealanders had exposed themselves as “prejudiced oafs” unable to handle defeat.
The Sportsman of the Year award went to the New Zealand wicket-keeper, Jock Edwards, for the second successive year.
