Balclutha takes top prize
PA Wellington The “Four In A Corner” syndicate, of Balclutha, took the top prize of $60,000 in Golden Kiwi Lottery 41. drawn in Wellington yesterday. The jackpot was not struck. The jackpot for Lottery 42, to be drawn on July 21, will be $lOO,OOO out of a pool of $llO,OOO. Results:—
Surfing.—Shaun Thomson, of Durban, outscored strong international competition to win his fifth consecutive Gunston 500 surfing competition at the Bay of Plenty, near Durban. The win elevated Thomson into first position in the International Professional Surfers’ ratings.
Cricket.— -John Edrich, of Surrey. finally reached the milestone of 100 hundreds at the Oval with 101 not out against Derbyshire. Edrich has waited almost a year since scoring his ninety-ninth century. He becomes the seventeenth player to have achieved the 100.
Cricket.—Jack Bannister, chairman of the Cricketers’ Association, said in London that free legal aid will be available for any of the 18 English-based cricketers who are having second thoughts about joining Kerry Packer’s cricket “circus,” the “Daily Mirror” reported.
