Nash biography wins N.Z. award

Wellington reporter Professor Keith Sinclair’s biography, “Walter Nash,” has won file non-fiction section of the New Zealand Book Awards for 1976. The fiction section was won by lan Wedde (Wellington) for “Dick Seddon’s Great Dive,” and the poetryaward was shared by Ruth Dallas (Dunedin) for “Walking on the Snow” and Alan Loney (Paraparaumu) for “Dear Mondrian.” Each category carries a prize of $2OOO provided by the New Zealand Literary Fund and the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council. The Minister of Internal

Affairs (Mr Highet) also announced that there had been a significant increase in funds for the literaryfund’s advisory committee to distribute. The amount available for 1977 was §58,200, an increase of almost 32 per cent on the 1976 grant. He hoped that increase could help in stimulating interest in literature and in providing more support for writers. It had too often been true that the literary area was the “poor relation” in the arts, he said. That was a sad reflection when it was realised that literature had a strong tradition in New Zealand.
