New funds for timeball

The Historic Places Trust will be able to complete restoration of the Timeball Station at Lyttelton this year, according to the trust’s chairman (Sir Alister Mclntosh). The Lottery Board of Control, has set up a special capital fund of $50,000 to help the trust acquire properties of national importance — a “most welcome development,” said Sir Alister. The trust could now finish restoration of many projects, including the Timeball Station, the Bishop’s School at Nelson, and the Whites Bay cable station. near Blenheim. New projects would include buying just under half a hectare at Waimate North, to preserve two of New Zealand’s oldest industrial buildings there — the blacksmith’s shop and the wheelwright’s shop, built in the 1830 s — and further restoration of the Rai Valley cottage in Marlborough.
