HARBOUR BOARD CONTINUES DEEPENING OF MARINA CHANNELS
| Steady progress is being made by the .Marlborough , Harbour Board on the I deepening of marina and ' commercial channels at ■ Havelock with the reclj amation of land which in ■ due course will form part : of a new 200-berth ma- ! rina.
The board’s suction ■ dredge, Kaituna, seen (at I top right) working on I dredging one of the maj rina channels, has deepend I all marina channels to 2m ! over all at low tide and i will soon start on the ' commercial channels. When this work is completed in about, two 1 months, a start will be > made on the formation of ' a new marina. This will be sited about right angles I to the area at present ; being reclaimed just south ! of the present marina ' (and to the right of the ' picture showing the pipe outlet).
j This is a big job and i will take between eight i and 10 months. A start i will then be made on the j provision of the first of what will ultimately comprise about 200 berths. For a time this area will be used merely as swinging moorings for boats, but floating jetties will be constructed later. The board’s plans go far beyond this, however. A new launching ramp is to be built and allowance has been made in the plans j for a commercial slipway. i A fuel berth, a new car
and trailer park, extensions to the boat sheds and the camping grounds (in collaboration with the town committee) are also envisaged. The local Lions chapter has undertaken to build a swimming pool and the board will provide the land for this adjacent to the camping grounds.
About 3.25 hectares of land (about 8 acres) will be reclaimed.
