Jim Herring dies
i Special correspondent Auckland I Mr J. S. (Jim) Herring, who 'died yesterday, aged 64, after a ilong illness, played a major part in the development in recent | years of Kumeu as a leading trotting centre. He was the first trainer to work horses at the Kumeu showgrounds about .30 years ago and had a big hand in the Kumeu Trotting Club’s acquisition of its own property. Mr Herring bred many good horses. Including the champion trotter, Easton Light. Among others were Great Evander, Miss Debra, Vanderford, Bata, Milford Boy and Sevander. Great Evander, a wellperformed pacer, became an outstanding sire of trotters. Four of the last six Rowe Cups have been won by his progeny — Easton Light last year, Robyn Evander (1975). Miss Debra (1973) and Paulette (1971). Great Evander is also the sire of this season's leading young j trotters, the three-year-old Even Speed and the two-year-old About Now. Mr Herring, some years ago gave Great Evander to his daughter, Pam, and her husband, Don Hayes. A principal in a carrying firm for many years, Mr Herring is survived also by his wife and a son. ■ Golf.— The Australian veteran, IKel Nagle, has withdrawn from I this year’s British Open golf championship, which starts at iTurnberrv next week. Nagle, an; (Australian and British Open! ' champion, pulled out because of la shoulder injury.
