New turn for cycle track

The English Park cycle track controversy is still I alive. The Christchurch City j Council will reconsider its I latest decision to keep the track, because pressure is being brought by the Toe H Track and Field Club and the Canterbury Football Association to take another look at the issue. Pressure from cyclists had prodded the council to make its first reversal of a plan to remove the cycle track. The parks and recreation committee will call an onsite meeting of representatives from all sports bodies using the park.

Soccer representatives said I that an international-size field at the park was not absolutely essential, but would be preferable. Athletic representatives said it was not possible for their activities—if they were to expand—to live together with cycling. Toe H now has a 330 m track inside the cycle track, and it wants a 400 m grassed track. At the same time, cyclists have argued that they need the city facilities for training and for some races, in addition to Denton Park, in Paparua County.
