Police head praises volunteers

: The head of the Christchurch police district (Chief Superintendent G. E. Twenty|man) yesterday praised the work of voluntary organisations during this week’s floods. “Without their help the police would have been unable to give assistance to everyone who needed it,” Mr Twentyman said. In particular, he praised the part played by the jetboat owners and Land-Rover drivers who ferried people from their flooded homes, the Army, the Red Cross, and the Civil Defence organisation. “The flood showed that Civil Defence was capable of organising itself at short notice and providing shelter; for the evacuees,” said Mr Twentyman.

One problem during the emergency work had been a small number of householders who called the police unnecessarily.

“There are always some people who call in emergency services for something they could easily do themselves,” Mr Twentyman said.

“They seem to forget that at times like this there are many people who really need; assistance.” he said.
