Catchment bd in control of assistance

Technical and financial assistance for Christchurch home owners stricken by flooding and slips at the week-end will be administered by the North Canterbury Catchment board, the Minister of Works (Mr Young) said in Parliament yesterday, the Press Association reported. Replying to an urgent question by Mr B. G. Bar clay (Lab., Christchurch Central), Mr Young said the board would deal with applications for aid made either by individual ratepayers or mrde, on their behalf, by a loial authority. Lyttelton Borough and Akaroa County were not part of the area under the control of the board, but

Mr Young said he hoped that an agreement could be reached to channel aid to these areas through the board too. The secretary of the catchment board (Mr E. R. Wood) said yesterday that it was normal for some board funds to be used in such relief situations, but he was not aware of any appeals for assistance. The board’s engineer could not be reached for any details. Mr Wood said he had not heard of any likely agreement with the Lyttelton and Akaroa local bodies. Neither area was serviced by the board, because they had decided not to pay rates to the board, he said.
