Edge of loading ban dulled

Lyttelton will get off lightly from the watersiders’ container load-out ban. The ban by the Waterside Workers’ Federation was imposed last week on the dispatch of imported full containers from container terminals.

At the moment Lyttelton has only two full containers waiting to be dispatched to consignees. They were all that were left of the 26 full containers discharged by the ACT 2 before the ban was imposed. The next container ship — the Jervis Bay — will arrive on Friday but she has few more than 20 full containers to discharge, which will hardly constitute a serious backlog at the terminal. The terminal’s manager (Mr P. Morgan) said yesterday that the ban would not affect the working of container ships. Watersiders claim they did

not get the recent 6 per cent general wage order added to the amount they get in lieu of handling full containers which are sent straight to consignees without being unpacked. It is believed that the federation and the Container

Terminal Operators’ Association were considering yesterday whether to take the matter to the Waterfront Industry Tribunal.
