Foster child’s case

The Christchurch Foster Care Association has investigated a complaint about the removal by the Department of Social Welfare of a seven-year-old boy from his foster parents on March 14, and is now satisfied that the interests of the boy and the foster parents were fairly considered. The complaint was reported in “The Press” on May 10. The foster parents were reported to have believed that the boy’s removal from their care was connected with the disciplining of the child. Mr A.' U. McCurdy, president of the association, says that his association has looked further into the case about which he expressed concern at the time. “The association has at all times the responsibility

to.comment when a question arises concerning the interests and long-term well-being of foster children, foster parents, and legal guardians,” says Mr McCurdy. “However, in this case the association is now satisfied that the interests of the child and of the foster parents also were fairly and sufficiently considered by the department and its officers — at the time and subsequently.” Mr McCurdy says that the association regrets any implied criticism of the particular social workers who took responsibility on the day action was taken, and that the association wishes to dissociate itself from their being named in the article in “The Press.”
