Gretel II ‘competitive’
NZPA Sydney The rebuilt Gretel If was a most competitive yacht, especially in view of the rigging problems with the new American 12-metre yachts, Enterprise and Independence, the manager of the yacht’s America’s Cup crew said yesterday. Mr Bill Manning spoke at Sydney's airport before the main body of Gretel Il’s team left for Newport, Rhode Island, to join the advance squad of crew members and shore support team.
“Her bow has been narrowed by about nine inches on either side, and she nas been given a new aluminium deck,” he said. “The rudder is bigger and stands straighter, and she is carrying more sail area. “Her hull is narrower and her total weight reduced by 5000 pounds to about 60,000 pounds.”
