Trees in the city

Sir. — Ten thousand trees in store for Christchurch? Who is kidding whom? First, trees on the Port Hills hardly help the botanical desolation in the city. Then we leam that suddenly many mature trees need replacing. What has the parks department been doing for the last 20 years? Christchurch is due to reap the reward of neglect and insensitivity. If the Sockbum roundabout is an example of tree planting policy for the area then the future does not hold out much hope. Two trees for one in Latimer Square does not compensate for one felled mature tree, let alone the trees in Sydenham to be felled for the motorway. A small area on Cambridge Terrace does not compensate for the desolation of Blenheim Road, FerryRoad and the barren area beyond Manchester Street. On the brighter side are the Moorhouse Avenue plantings. We need ten thousand trees in the citv now.—Yours, etc., R. A. CROWDER. Horticultural Department, Lincoln College. June 10, 1977.
