Bursary protest meeting
A public meeting will be , i held at the University of ! Canterbury on Wednesday to protest about the Governments “inaction” in revising the standard tertiary buri sary. i The president of the university's Students' Association (Mr N. Petrie) said , that students wanted a cost! -of - living increase for the; irest of this year, and for I next year. Since the level of the bur- ; sary had been set in 1975, 1 costs for students, such as textbooks and hostel accomimodation, had risen. Students had probably been hit harder than most by! i inflation, Mr Petrie said.
i The meeting will be chaired by Mr Petrie, ant there will be speakers fron the main political partie: and the New Zealand Uni versity Students’ Associ ation. Meetings will also be held in Dunedin and Wellington .and a march has been organlised in Auckland. Mr Petrk j said that a march might alsc ibe held in Christchurch aftct the presentation of the Bud get. The New Zealand University Students’ Association recently urged the Government to fulfil the promises il made to students in 197! about the standard tertiarj i bursary.
