Gas supply critical
The Christchurch Gas Coal and Coke Company, Ltd. broadcast a request on radio and television at 2 p.m. yesterday, asking people to avoid using gas appliances until 7 p.m. The company’s general manager (Mr C. Kennedy) said that pressures had been reduced to try to conserve gas stocks after the heavy demand on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, but a mechanical breakdown in the plant in Moorhouse Avenue on Thursday evening had left the company two hours behind production schedules. The request was broadcast to avoid a total shutdown, he said.
