Ruapehu search called off

PA Wanganui No trace has been found of two men missing on Mount Ruapehu, and with little hope of finding them alive, the search was called oft' at 5.10 p.m. yesterday. Twenty men and two helicopters were involved in the search for Arthur Olsen, and Anthony Morrison, both aged 41, and both married, of Wellington. The two men went to the mountain last Saturday and were expected home the next day. A note was found in the Rangipo Hut telling of their intention to climb Mitre Peak on the Sunday. Two sets of footprints were discovered leading from the hut to within 90 metres of the peak, and yesterday a helicopter search with Mr Graham Dingle, the well-known mountaineer. discovered footprints higher up. A Tongariro National Park ranger, Mr D. Sidwell, said last evening that no other tracks were found, probably because they had been covered by snow.
