Protest to union
Forty of the staff emploved In the head office at Havwrights. Ltd. in Christchurch. have written a letter to their union, the Canterbury Clerical Workers' I, mon. accusing it of doing nothing while they were locked out when Canterbury shop assistants went on strike on June 2 and 3. The letter said that no meeting had been arranged to let clerical workers decide on what action they should take over the Shoo Trading Hours Bill, and not many of the Haywrights head office staff were prepared to support a strike. “We were turned out of our jobs along with the shop assistants regardless of this, while you stood by." the letter said "If this is an example of how a union looks after its members, it is one that we would rather not be a part of." The union's secretary (.Mr I Biacker) >aid that it did no discuss union affairs in bur he would be happy to discuss the matter with the members.
