Shift for fountain
The historic Sydenham Park drinking fountain will be shifted further into the park to make wav for the Brougham Street expressway but it will probably not be restored to its former grandeur. Even moving the fountain max be difficult because of its stonework, which could collapse if not handled carefuilv. Two stonomasonry firms contacted bv rhe Christchurch Citv Council said that the sandstone arch,
capitals, and bases of the columns were beyond repair. Replacement would require a stone cart er and the firms thought that this might have to be done overseas, at considerable cost. The works and traffic committee suggested that the marble drinking bowl might he fitted to a new stone base, without the columns, arch, and castiron lamp. A commemorative plaque could be attached.
