Many more woman teachers
PA Auckland Almost three times more women than men started teaching at State primary and intermediate schools in the 12 months to March this year. And the dominance of women in the profession is also highlighted by the number entering teachers’ colleges this year.
Education Department figures on teachers’ college rolls just released show 1353 women started training this year compared to 376 men. Of 5348 primary student trainees this year, 4166 are women. The imbalance is pronounced at all of the i country’s seven teachers’ colleges but is most extreme in Hamilton, where only 194 of the 923 students are men. More men than women also left primary teacher training last year. More than 420 men gave up teacher training last year after almost a quarter were told they were unsuitable. Others took leave without pay or, in many cases, resigned.
