Hearing on port dispute today
The Lyttelton container terminal demarcation dispute will be heard by the waterfront Industry Tribunal in
Wellington today. ' The dispute arose late last month when the Lyttelton Harbour Board Employees’ Union claimed that all fulltime workers at the terminal should be union members. The union threatened strike action if its case was not taken to the Port Conciliation Committee. The
• notice to strike has since , been withdrawn. Specifically the union wants foremen and steve--1 dores at the terminal to join
its ranks. A similar dispute has arisen at Otago. Both cases] will be heard together today. | As well as representatives of the Harbour Board employees, foremen and ] stevedores, and the respec-l tive harbour boards, the! Federation of Labour is expected to attend the hearing as an interested party.
