Two die in plane crash
Blenheimi pie tv.o occupants ot a| light aircraft which burned; out after crashing on a farm airstrip in the Awatere Valley yesterday have yet to be i Identified. The bodies and the aircraft were burned' beyond recognition. The aircraft, believed to I be the South Canterbury Aero Club’s new $33,000 Cherokee Warrior, made! what appeared to be[ an emergency landing on the! property of Mr F. W. Fronting at Camden, some 45km from Blenheim, about 3.30 p.m.
Mr R. M. Greer, president of the South Canterbury Aero Club, said last evening that the aircraft left Timaru Airport yesterday for two or three days flying. An onlooker had identified the number of the aircraft as ZKEBN, which was the registration of the club’s plane.
Mr Greer said that an Australian pilot who was a member of the club had hired the aircraft, and had flown it to the Blenheim area.
The mishap was seen by Mr Prouting. The aircraft appeared to be in trouble as it attempted to land but crashed and immediately burst into flames.
