Masterton

The only woman in New Zealand to pilot a helicopter. Catherine Ann Penney, of Masterton, has been invited by the International Helicopter Pilots’ Association to join the “whirly-girls” as the 239th member in the world. Mrs Penney has now received by post’ her whirly-girl badge — a model helicopter with a girl’s face which she will use as a pendant — and an invitation to the International Helicopter Pilots’ Association’s annual meeting in San Diego.

“I would love to attend, but would need a winning Golden Kiwi ticket,” said Mrs Penney.

A typesetter at the “Wairarapa Times Age.” and the mother of two children, Mrs Penney joined the Wellington Aero Club and obtained her pilot’s licence about 15 years ago. She was a flying instructor in Auckland before she | married.

Retaining her interest in flying, she gained her helicopter rating in September, 1975. Mrs Penney’s husband. Ted, is a commercial helicopter pilot.
