Balmerino eighth

NZPA California Vigors, a 12 to 1 outsider, won the $200,000 Hollywood Park Invitational Handicap at Hollywood Park yesterday. Vigors, owned by W. R. Hawn, of Dallas, Texas, and ridden by Jerry Lambert, improved quickly at the final turn and ran ion too well for the favourite Caucasus beating him by threequarters of a length. Anne’s Pretender ran on well for third, half a length behind Caucasus. Some 200 Australians and New Zealanders who travelled to watch Baimerino and Taras Bulba lin the big race were disappoin- ■ ted. i Baimerino challenged and led: briefly at the home bend in the mile and a half race but. once headed Maurice Campbell did not persist with the champion and he; finished eighth. Taras Bulba did most of the pacemaking. He led from the 1600 m to the 600 m but soon tired to finish tenth. Vigors won in a time of 2min 26.8 sec well outside the course record of 2min 25.65ec set by Fiddle Isle in 1970.
