Builders deny talk of lay-offs

There is no talk in Christchurch of building industry worker lay-offs, the president of the Canterbury Master Builders and Joiners’ Association (Mr W. J. McFarlane) said on Monday. He was commenting on predictions of future lay-offs made at the week-end by persons in the Auckland building industry. The president of the Auckland Master Builders’ Association (Mr R. G. Lawton) said there was “no question” of lay-offs because of the poor forward work situation; and an injection of Government money into the commercial sector was needed.

“A lot of this sort of thing is dreamt up, too,” said Mr McFarlane, “to put pressure on Government. But let’s face it, we are in the same situation this year as last — wondering where our next job is coming from. “It’s just a case of steady as she goes, I think. There is no need for great alarm at this stage.” Canterbury builders are in the middle of a quarterly survey to ascertain the total work load, and the results of that survey will be put before the building industry council on June 15.
